What restaurant billing software must do in India
A restaurant counter in India juggles dine-in tables, takeaway, parcel orders and delivery apps, often all at once at 1:30 pm and 8:30 pm. Restaurant billing software has to keep up with that rush and still get the GST right on every bill. Before choosing one, check that it can:
- Seat tables and send a kitchen order ticket (KOT) the moment an order is taken
- Bill counter, takeaway and parcel orders without switching apps
- Bring in Swiggy and Zomato orders so nobody re-types them
- Take cash, UPI, card or a split payment, and show a UPI QR for the exact amount
- Print a clear thermal bill or send it on WhatsApp
- Keep billing when the internet drops
- Show the owner today's sales, top dishes and payment modes from anywhere
VelBooks POS does all of these, on an Android tablet or phone.
Dine-in: table management and KOT
Pick the table, add the dishes and send the KOT so the kitchen starts cooking. Add more items to the same table as the guests order, then turn the table's order into a GST bill when they ask for it. The table is free again for the next guests.
- Tables you set up to match your floor
- KOT printed for the kitchen as soon as the order is taken
- Running orders stay on the table until billed
- Bill shows CGST and SGST at your restaurant's rate

Takeaway and parcel billing
Every bill has an order type: Counter, Takeaway or Parcel / Delivery. A cashier can ring up a takeaway in seconds: tap the dishes from Favourites or Most Sold, or type the short item code, then pay and print with one key (F10). Add the customer's mobile number for phone orders and send the bill on WhatsApp.
Swiggy and Zomato orders in one place
Online orders from Swiggy and Zomato come into VelBooks POS, so they sit next to your dine-in and takeaway orders. The kitchen gets one flow of orders, nothing is re-typed, and your day's sales include every channel.
GST note: since 1 January 2022 the e-commerce operator (Swiggy, Zomato and others) pays GST on restaurant service supplied through it under section 9(5). The restaurant does not charge GST again on those orders, but they still count in its turnover (CBIC Circular 167/23/2021).

Fast settlement: cash, UPI QR, card or split
- Cash: enter the amount tendered (quick buttons for exact, ₹500, ₹2,000) and the screen shows the change to return
- UPI: a UPI QR for the exact bill amount that guests scan with GPay, PhonePe, Paytm or BHIM
- Card and Split when a table pays partly by card and partly by UPI
- Tick Print receipt, Send bill on WhatsApp and Open cash drawer on the same screen
Every payment is recorded by mode, so the day-end cash, UPI and card totals match what you collected.

Keeps billing when the internet drops
A weak connection at the peak of lunch should not stop billing. VelBooks POS works offline: bills are saved on the device and sync to VelBooks automatically when the connection returns. Online orders from delivery apps and WhatsApp bills resume when you are back online. How offline billing works.
Menu, categories and item master
Set up your menu once: dish name, a short name for the bill, item code, category, rate, GST rate and HSN code, and a photo for the billing tile. Mark favourites so they appear first. Import the menu from Excel if you already have it in a sheet, and switch a dish off when it is not available today.
For items you buy and resell, such as bottled water and soft drinks, keep stock tracking on and set a low-stock alert so you reorder in time.

Day summary and reports
The dashboard shows today's sales, number of bills, average bill value and items sold, with an hourly sales chart to plan staff for the rush. See the split between UPI, cash and card, your top-selling dishes and category-wise sales, and the latest bills from every counter. Close the day with the day-end report and export the numbers when you need them.

GST for restaurants explained
GST on food depends on where and how it is served, not only on what you sell. These are the rules most food businesses meet. Your item master in VelBooks POS holds a GST rate per item, so the bill shows the right CGST and SGST split.
| Situation | GST | Input tax credit |
|---|---|---|
| Restaurant, café, dhaba or mess serving food (standalone) | 5% | Not available |
| Cloud kitchens and central kitchens (restaurant service) | 5% | Not available |
| Restaurant service in a specified premises (a hotel that supplied any room above ₹7,500 a day in the previous financial year, or a supplier who declares it) | 18% | Available |
| Hotel room up to ₹7,500 per day (from 22 Sep 2025) | 5% | Not available |
| Hotel room above ₹7,500 per day | 18% | Available |
| Food orders through Swiggy, Zomato and other e-commerce operators (from 1 Jan 2022) | Paid by the e-commerce operator under section 9(5) | Restaurant does not charge GST again on these orders |
Packaged goods sold over the counter (for example a sealed box of biscuits or a bottle of water sold as goods) are taxed as goods at that item's own rate, so a bakery or sweet shop can have more than one rate on the same bill.
Composition scheme: eligible small restaurants can opt for composition (5% of turnover for restaurant service), issue a bill of supply and cannot charge GST to customers. Check eligibility with your CA.

Multiple counters and branches
Run a separate counter for takeaway or a second billing point during the weekend rush, and add branches when you open new outlets. Each bill records its counter and cashier, and the owner sees all counters in one dashboard.
How to choose restaurant billing software
- Run a real rush test. Bill 20 orders in 10 minutes on the trial, mixing dine-in, takeaway and parcel.
- Pull the internet cable. Check that billing continues and that bills sync when you reconnect.
- Check the GST on a sample bill against your restaurant's rate with your CA.
- Ask the all-in price: software, add-ons per counter or outlet, printer and tablet.
- Check delivery-app orders arrive without re-typing.
- See the day-end report and make sure cash, UPI and card totals are clear.
