How to calculate GST

Adding GST (price before tax)

GST amount = Net price × GST rate ÷ 100
Total = Net price + GST amount

Removing GST (price including tax)

Net price = Total × 100 ÷ (100 + GST rate)
GST amount = Total − Net price

A common mistake is to remove GST by subtracting 18% of the total. On ₹1,180, 18% is ₹212.40, but the actual GST is ₹180. Always divide by (100 + rate).

CGST, SGST and IGST

For a sale within the same state (intra-state), the GST is split equally into CGST (central) and SGST (state), or UTGST in union territories without a legislature. For a sale to another state (inter-state), the full amount is charged as IGST. The place of supply decides which applies.

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate 18% GST on an amount?
Multiply the amount by 18 and divide by 100. For ₹1,000, GST is ₹180 and the total is ₹1,180. Within a state, that is CGST ₹90 + SGST ₹90.
How do I remove GST from an inclusive price?
Divide the price by (1 + rate/100). For ₹1,180 at 18%, the net price is 1,180 ÷ 1.18 = ₹1,000 and the GST is ₹180.
What are the GST slabs in India now?
Since 22 September 2025, the main slabs are 5% and 18%, with 40% for select goods, plus nil/exempt items and a few special rates such as 3% on gold and silver.
When is IGST charged instead of CGST and SGST?
IGST applies to inter-state supplies, where the supplier's state and the place of supply are different. CGST + SGST apply when both are in the same state.
Is the 12% or 28% GST slab still used?
GST 2.0 merged most 12% and 28% items into 5% or 18%. Certain tobacco products continue at earlier rates plus cess until a date to be notified. Use the 'Other' option for any such rate or for older invoices.
