What is POS billing software?
POS (point of sale) billing software is the program your cashier uses at the counter to ring up a sale, take payment and print or send the bill. A good POS does more than a billing machine: every bill reduces stock, payments are recorded by mode, and the owner can see the day's sales from anywhere.

Cashier and shift
Each bill records the cashier and counter. The owner sees who billed what, and whether a cashier may change rates at billing is a setting on each item.
Customer details
Add the customer's mobile number and name to a bill when you need them, for example to send the bill on WhatsApp.
Works offline, syncs when you're back online
Internet cuts are common at many counters. VelBooks POS works offline: bills you make while the connection is down are saved on the device and sync to VelBooks automatically when the connection returns. The status at the bottom of the screen shows Online · All bills synced when everything is uploaded.
New Swiggy/Zomato orders and WhatsApp bills resume once you are back online. The main VelBooks web app (accounts, GST returns, online store) needs an internet connection.
Runs on an Android tablet or phone
Start with a tablet and a thermal printer. Add a barcode scanner and cash drawer when your counter needs them.
- Android tablet or phone. VelBooks POS runs on Android tablets and phones, so a counter can start with a device you may already own.
- Thermal receipt printer. Receipts print on 80 mm or 58 mm thermal paper, and on A4/A5 when you need a full page. Tell us your printer model and we will confirm it before you buy.
- Barcode scanner (optional). Scan packaged items, or type the short item code shown on each tile.
- Cash drawer (optional). Tick Open cash drawer on the payment screen when you take cash.
- Internet. Needed to sync and to receive online orders, but VelBooks POS keeps billing when the connection drops. See offline billing.

Multiple counters and branches
Add billing counters when the rush grows and branches when you open a new outlet, for example separate dine-in and parcel counters. Every bill carries its counter and cashier, the dashboard shows recent bills live from all counters, and the day-end report closes each shift cleanly.
GST on POS bills
Every item in VelBooks POS has its own GST rate and HSN code, so the bill shows the correct CGST and SGST split and the round-off. Rates differ by trade:
- Restaurants, cafés and cloud kitchens: restaurant service is generally 5% without input tax credit, and 18% with credit in specified premises (hotels with room tariffs above ₹7,500). See the restaurant page for details and sources.
- Swiggy and Zomato orders: GST on food ordered through e-commerce operators is paid by the operator under section 9(5), so the restaurant does not charge it again on those orders (CBIC Circular 167/23/2021).
- Shops and supermarkets: goods carry their own rates (nil, 5%, 18% and 40% after GST 2.0). Keep the rate correct per item; see GST 2.0 rates for retailers.
Why counters are moving to POS software
- UPI is the default at the counter. In September 2026 UPI handled 24,068 million transactions, and payments to merchants were the larger share; groceries and supermarkets, fast-food outlets and restaurants are among the biggest merchant categories (NPCI UPI statistics). A POS that shows a UPI QR for the exact bill amount and records the payment mode saves end-of-day reconciliation.
- Food service is growing. The NRAI India Food Services Report 2024 projects the market to grow from about ₹5.69 lakh crore in FY24 to ₹7.76 lakh crore by FY28, with quick-service restaurants and cafés growing fastest (BusinessLine report on NRAI IFSR 2024).
