Pharmacy compliance essentials

GST rates after GST 2.0

From 22 September 2025, GST on most drugs and medicines fell from 12% to 5%, 36 lifesaving drugs became nil-rated, and many medical devices, diagnostic kits and glucometers moved to 5%. Update your item master and check rates by HSN code.

Prescription drugs

Under the Drugs and Cosmetics Rules, Schedule H and H1 drugs must be sold only against a prescription, and Schedule H1 sales must be recorded in a separate register (prescriber, patient, drug and quantity) kept for three years. Check with your drug control department for current requirements.

Batch and expiry discipline

Follow first-expiry-first-out on the shelf, review near-expiry stock every month, and agree return terms for expiring stock with your distributors.

Selling online

Online sale of medicines is regulated. Use an online store for OTC, wellness and personal care products, and take advice before listing prescription drugs.
