Frequently asked questions

What are the current GST slabs?
Since 22 September 2025, the main GST rates are 5% (merit rate) and 18% (standard rate), with a 40% rate for select goods such as luxury and sin goods. Some items are nil-rated, and a few special rates (for example 3% on gold and silver) continue.
Is e-invoicing mandatory for my business?
E-invoicing applies if your aggregate annual turnover has exceeded ₹5 crore in any financial year since 2017-18. It covers B2B, export and SEZ invoices, not B2C sales.
When is an e-way bill required?
Generally when goods worth more than ₹50,000 are moved, as per CGST Rule 138, with some exemptions and state-specific intra-state limits. Read our e-way bill rules guide.
What did the 57th GST Council meeting decide?
On 8 October 2026 the Council recommended process reforms rather than rate changes: a late-fee waiver for small taxpayers who file a delayed return within the same month, a lower maximum general penalty (₹10,000), a ₹10,000 minimum for show cause notices, limits on e-way bill interceptions, faster system-based refunds, simpler registration and, from the April 2027 return, a new way to correct liability and ITC. GSTN published FAQs on 13 October 2026 for guidance only. These apply only after CBIC issues the notifications, circulars or law amendments; none had been notified as of 14 October 2026.
When can I file GSTR-9 for FY 2025-26?
GSTN enabled GSTR-9 and GSTR-9C for FY 2025-26 on the portal from 8 October 2026. Complete all GSTR-1 and GSTR-3B for that year first so the tile appears. The ordinary Rule 80 due date is 31 December 2026 unless extended — check the portal.
