How the checker decides

Is an e-way bill required?

  1. Value: an e-way bill is needed when the consignment value is more than ₹50,000, whether the movement is a sale, a non-supply movement such as a stock transfer, or a purchase from an unregistered supplier. For movement within a state, the state's own limit applies.
  2. Job work and handicrafts: goods sent inter-state to a job worker, and handicraft goods moved inter-state by a seller exempt from registration, need an e-way bill whatever the value.
  3. Exemptions: no e-way bill is needed for non-motorised conveyance, for goods listed in the Annexure to Rule 138 (many fresh and unprocessed items, household LPG and others), and for a few other notified cases.
  4. Part B: vehicle details can be skipped for movement of up to 50 km within the same state between your place of business and a transporter.

How validity is calculated

CGST Rule 138(10)
CargoValidity
Normal cargo1 day for up to 200 km, plus 1 day for every further 200 km or part of it
Over-dimensional cargo1 day for up to 20 km, plus 1 day for every further 20 km or part of it

A "day" runs until midnight of the day after the e-way bill is generated. For example, an e-way bill for 450 km generated at 10 am on 3 October gets 3 days and is valid until 11:59 pm on 6 October. It can be extended from 8 hours before to 8 hours after it expires. Since 1 January 2025, e-way bills can only be generated for documents dated within the last 180 days, and a bill can't be extended beyond 360 days from generation.

Frequently asked questions

Is an e-way bill required below ₹50,000?
Generally no. The exceptions are inter-state movement of goods to a job worker and inter-state movement of handicraft goods by a seller exempt from registration, which need one whatever the value. Some states also have their own rules for movement within the state.
How is e-way bill validity calculated?
For normal cargo, 1 day for the first 200 km and 1 more day for every further 200 km or part of it. For over-dimensional cargo, 1 day per 20 km. Each day ends at midnight of the day after generation.
Is the ₹50,000 limit including GST?
Yes. The consignment value includes GST (CGST, SGST/UTGST, IGST and cess) but leaves out the value of exempt goods supplied on the same invoice.
Can an e-way bill be extended?
Yes, from 8 hours before to 8 hours after it expires, if the goods haven't reached their destination. Since 2025, extensions can't go beyond 360 days from the original generation.
Is an e-way bill needed for a stock transfer?
Yes, if the value is above the limit. Rule 138 covers movement for reasons other than supply, such as a stock transfer between branches.
