Grocery shops sell a mix of nil-rated, 5% and 18% items, so getting the rate right per item matters.

• Nil-rated: fresh fruits and vegetables, fresh milk, unbranded and unpackaged cereals and pulses, and, since 22 Sep 2025, UHT milk, pre-packaged paneer and Indian breads like roti and paratha.
• 5%: since GST 2.0, many packaged foods (namkeen, sauces, pasta, chocolates, butter, ghee, biscuits) and personal care items (soap, shampoo, toothpaste, hair oil).
• 40%: sugar-sweetened and aerated beverages.
• Tobacco products continue at their old rates plus compensation cess until a date to be notified.

Always check the current rate for the exact HSN code. Many small kirana stores opt for the composition scheme, which means a bill of supply and no GST charged to customers.

Vegetable and fruit shops

Fresh fruits and vegetables are typically nil-rated under GST when sold as fresh produce (confirm the HSN for each item). Shops that also sell packaged foods, oils or FMCG need the correct rate on those lines. Loose items sold by weight work best with a clear unit (kg) and a simple rate per kg in your item list; packaged brands use barcodes.

• Create items for common vegetables and fruits with unit kg (or dozen for eggs) and the right GST rate (usually nil for fresh produce).
• Use barcode billing for branded and packaged goods on the same counter.
• Record phone and WhatsApp orders in order management so home-delivery lists are not lost.
• If you are GST-registered, issue a tax invoice or bill of supply as required; a cash memo alone is not enough for taxable supplies.
