There is no honest “best free Tally alternative” that matches full Tally accounting, e-invoicing depth and multi-user desktop use at ₹0. Free tiers (Swipe, Vyapar mobile, Zoho Books free, Khatabook) help with basic invoicing or udhaar; they are not a drop-in Tally Gold replacement. Open-source stacks (for example ERPNext) can work if you have an implementer — budget for setup, not only the licence.
Tally alternative for Mac and Linux
TallyPrime is a Windows desktop product (cloud access is a paid add-on). If your team is on Mac or Linux, a browser-based product is usually simpler than running Windows in a VM only for billing. Migrating from Tally: checklist (manual / Excel)
Until a product owner confirms an automated Tally import, treat migration as export → clean → re-enter. A calm cut-over beats a rushed one at month-end.
- Export what Tally can export today: trial balance, ledger balances, item list with HSN/rates, party list with GSTINs, and open invoices/receivables. Use Excel/CSV where Tally offers it. (Automated Tally import into VelBooks is UNCONFIRMED — plan a manual or Excel load.)
- Freeze a cut-off date. Finish the day's bills in Tally, then start new bills only in the new software from the next morning.
- Rebuild the item master with SKU, HSN, GST rate, unit and opening stock. Use our stock register Excel if you need a bridge.
- Add customers and suppliers with GSTIN, state and credit limit. Validate a few GSTINs before go-live.
- Enter opening balances (cash, bank, debtors, creditors, stock) so your first GSTR-1 and accounts start clean.
- Run a parallel week: issue 10 real bills in both systems (B2B, B2C, inter-state, credit note) and compare tax and stock.
- Keep Tally read-only for old-year audits; do not delete the company data.
When you should keep Tally
- Your CA's entire practice runs on Tally and you need matching voucher-level accounting.
- You must bill with no internet for long stretches (true offline desktop).
- You already paid for Gold multi-user on a stable Windows LAN and it works.
In those cases, stay on Tally — and use VelBooks only if you later want a separate web storefront, which is a different job.
